Wearing a short hair style for prom can be very simple.  You could simply style your hair the way you normally do, and add a decorative hair pin or barrette, combined with fancy earrings. 

 

Short hair style, see left, features very long layers that taper down to the ends of the hair that are mid neck.

Notice the fancy long earrings and makeup application make this style look very sophisticated.

 

Another great example of a short, classy hair style is shown below, right.  The long layers in the crown area are pulled under with a lot of back-combing to create height.  The layers on the sides and back are flipped up.
